The sun was shining down on Trafalgar Studios last night as award-winning director Ned Bennett’s bold revival of Peter Shaffer’s iconic psychological thriller Equus finally opened in Studio 1 with a star-studded press night.
Trafalgar Theatre Productions‘ highly anticipated production with English Touring Theatre and Theatre Royal Stratford East will play for a strictly limited season until 7 September.
There was real excitement on the red carpet too as VIPs arrived to watch the highly-acclaimed play. Special guests included Derren Brown, Jeremy Vine, Floella Benjamin, Simon Callow, Kimberley Wyatt and Max Rogers, Tyger Drew-Honey, Stephanie Beecham, Adam Garcia, Lady Colin Campbell, Ellie Kendrick, Joel Fry, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and Kathy Lette.
In a glowing 5 star review for The Telegraph, theatre critic Dominic Cavendish, said, “My over-riding feeling is that I’ve not seen a more richly achieved production at Trafalgar Studios since its conversion from the Whitehall in 2004. A boundless pleasure. Giddy-up go.”
Inspired by a true story, Equus is a gripping and transfixing psychological thriller which sets out to explore the complex relationships between devotion, myth and sexuality. When teenager Alan Strang’s pathological fascination leads him to blind six horses in a Hampshire stable, psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart is tasked with uncovering the motive behind the boy’s violent act. As Dysart delves into Alan’s world of twisted spiritualty, passion and sexuality, he begins to question his own sanity and motivations in a world driven by consumerism.
